Keighley residents have won a major victory this week after Bradford Council announced a major U-turn on controversial plans to close Keighley Tip, following fury from residents across the town, local Conservative Councillors and the town's MP.
The news comes after local MP Robbie Moore, alongside community champion Laura Kelly and Councillor Martin Crange, launched a petition to Save the Tip signed by over 7,000 local people, presenting the petition to Parliament last month after Bradford Council refused to debate it.
Reacting to the news, Robbie Moore MP said:
"Today’s screeching U-turn from Bradford Council is a victory for the residents of Keighley and my thanks go to each and every one of the 7,311 residents who took time to sign our petition to Save the Tip, which I had the honour to present to Parliament last month.
A huge thank you to community champion Laura Kelly, Councillor Martin Crangle and most importantly everyone who took time sign this petition - this is community spirit in action.
But let’s be absolutely clear here.
Labour run Bradford Council’s handling of the situation throughout has been a total and utter fiasco, and this U-turn need not have happened had Bradford Council listened to the people of Keighley from Day 1.
It is absolutely laughable to see Labour Councillors (and even the town’s former MP!) trying to take credit for putting out a fire that they started in the first place.
Well done all - we did it!! Keighley’s Tip is saved! Thank you for all your hard work."
