Keighley and Ilkley MP Robbie Moore has met with local nannies and campaigners Maria Culley and Allie Bell to hear new proposals for nanny regulation.
The pair’s new ”Road to Nanny Regulation Propsosal” advocates for greater regulation of nannies in the industry, calling for minimum safeguarding standards, a mandatory registration on the Ofsted register and a dedicated Nanny register via a national Nanny association.
Currently, Nannies, who play a vital role in a child’s upbringing, are not required by law to go through through DBS checks or first aid training. The campaign aims to push for further regulation across the nanny industry, preventing those who are unsafe, untrained or qualified from caring for children.
Both Maria and Allie argue that once nannies are regulated and licensed, it will provide parents with another viable and flexible option – whilst keeping families around the UK safe from harm.
Also in the proposals are plans for a similar Care Inspectorate System to that of Wales and Scotland, nannies to be included in the 30 hours funded childcare scheme, new incentive programmes and a dedicated National Nanny Association.
With 16 years of experience, Maria Culley was recently was awarded Nanny of the Year 2023 for West Yorkshire. She is currently a Nanny and believes more regulation this is the way forward for the nanny industry.
Allie Bell, the second co-founder of the campaign, has worked within the childcare industry for over 30 years and recently won the 2023 Nanny Agency of Year Award. She has worked as a Norland Nanny, in nurseries, in schools and now as a Nanny agency owner.
The campaign also met with Mr Moore in July and January to discuss their campaign.
