Keighley and Ilkley MP Robbie Moore has reacted with fury to the Post Office Ltd.’s lack of engagement over their decision to close Haworth’s Post Office at the top of Main Street as the closure date of the 29th July draws near.
Following a long battle over the last 18 months by Moore as well as local campaigners, Haworth Parish Council and the three Worth Valley District Councillors, the Post Office have decided to close the Haworth Post Office once and for all, leaving Haworth’s with a counter service at the Co-op on Station Road. Moore recently requested a further meeting with the Post Office Ltd in Haworth, asking them to come up and meet with local businesses in Haworth “to talk through additional operational options which could be implemented so as to keep the Main Street Post Office open beyond the 29th July.” However, this invitation was rejected.
This represents the latest step in Moore’s campaign to protect Haworth Post Office from closure. Moore presented a petition with nearly 7000 signatures in Parliament calling for Haworth Post Office to be protected from closure. He has also held numerous meetings with representatives from Post Office Ltd., as well as host several public meetings on the matter, the last of which was attended by well over one hundred people.
Moore has expressed his deep anger regarding the situation to the Post Office and has vowed to keep looking at options to ensure that Haworth residents and businesses located at the top end of Haworth are not permanently impacted.
Robbie Moore MP said: “Our much-loved Haworth Post Office is of so much importance to the local community. It supports the local tourism industry, is vital for the town’s small businesses, and would stand to play a key role as we all prepare to be ‘District of Culture’ in 2025.
It is absolutely disgraceful that Post Office Ltd. have rejected my invitation to come to Haworth to discuss this matter for a final time with local people. They seem hell-bent on closing Haworth Post Office in spite of the clear views of my constituents, and don’t seem prepared at all to look at alternative options.
I have worked tooth and nail, alongside the Save Haworth Post Office Campaign Team, Haworth Parish Council and the Worth Valley District Councillors to ensure Haworth Post Office stays open, including presenting a petition to Parliament, holding local meetings on the matter and lobbying Post Office Ltd. directly to make our point. My constituents in Haworth can be assured that I will absolutely keep exploring other options.”
