Keighley and Ilkley MP Robbie Moore ditched the suit and tie for fancy dress as he took part in the Sue Ryder Mascot Gold Cup. Moore was dressed as Keighley’s own Cliffe the Castle for the vent, to raise money for the Sue Ryder Manorlands Hospice in Keighley.
This was the fifteenth running of the race, which once set the record as the largest race of its kind. This year, there were 70 competitors, including Moore, Lego Man, Goofy and Worth Valley Councillor Chris Herd, who was dressed as cricketing legend Ian Botham.
Having made a strong start to the race, Moore unfortunately fell at the third fence, allowing Danger Mouse to scoop the coveted prize. Moore has worked with Sue Ryder regularly since becoming an MP, including opening local charity shops and taking part in the Keighley 10k to raise money for the Manorlands Hospice. So far, the mascot event has raised over £15,000 for the charity.
Robbie Moore MP said: “It was fantastic experience to be able to take part in the mascot race, not least dressed as one of Keighley’s most-loved buildings, to support The Sue Ryder Manorlands Hospice.
Whilst the race didn’t quite go to plan, it was still a very enjoyable event. It was great to see so many other people taking part as well, all coming together to raise funds for such a fantastic cause.
It has been a real pleasure to work with Sue Ryder and their Manorlands Hospice since becoming an MP, not only through fundraising events such as this and the Keighley 10k, but also visiting the various locations where they have a presence in Keighley and Ilkley, such as their shops. They really are a wonderful organisation, and I look forward to continuing to further their cause in the future.”
