Keighley and Ilkley MP Robbie Moore, who’s constituency covers the village of Haworth, met with the Save Haworth Post Office campaign group committee on Friday ahead of their protest which took place on Sunday.
The group was formed in the wake of the announcement that Haworth Main Street Post Office will close and be replaced by a counter service in the newly built Co-op on Station Road in September. Residents are worried that this closure will lead to a reduction in services for Haworth residents and the many tourists who visit the Bronte village every year.
The meeting was attended by local campaigners Carole Richardson, Emma Goodley and Lydia Mackinnon. This meeting comes ahead of a further meeting which Robbie has secured with Post Office Ltd and the Postmaster of Haworth Post Office. It was emphasised in the meeting that the Post Office was the only place in the village centre to get cash out.
Commenting Robbie said: “It is great that a campaign group of passionate local residents has been formed to raise awareness of this great loss to our historic village. Moving the Post Office away from the centre of the village down an extremely steep hill makes no sense whatsoever. As we emerge from the Covid pandemic, we need to make our villages and their amenities more accessible to residents and tourists, not create barriers.
“The campaign group represents all that is good about our area, with people coming together to fight for a common cause. It is vital now that as many people as possible respond to the consultation to make their feelings known that this decision is not supported by the community. You can respond to the consultation by email, letter or telephone.
“The campaign group have also set up a petition which I encourage as many people as possible to sign.”
