Local MP Robbie Moore has joined community leaders and servicemen and women to pay tribute to the Canadian air crew killed during a Second World War plane crash in Oakworth.
The tribute, overseen by Oakworth Village society, marked eighty years since the Air Crash, remembering the six Canadian airmen killed when their Wellington bomber crashed above Oakworth in 1944.
The memorial was attended by more than than 100 people, and included the laying of wreaths followed by a reception in Oakworth village hall, where information about the crew was displayed by the Men of Worth Project.
Speaking after the memorial, Robbie Moore MP said:
"Eighty years ago, on the 2nd January 1944, a Wellington Bomber BK 387 crashed into the hillside at Tewitt Lane, killing all six of her crew members, all of whom were Royal Canadian Air Force men from RAF Ossington.
Today was the Annual Tewitt Memorial Service, a chance for all to remember and pay tribute to our Canadian friends who passed away in the Worth Valley.
Marking 80 years since the incident, it was brilliant to see so many people in attendance, including relatives of the aircrew who has flown in from Seattle in the US to attend the service.
Huge thanks to Mrs Armstrong and her team for organising today’s event.
We will remember them.
