16-year-old Ellie Merritt from Keighley is recognised as the next 'Unsung Hero' after many nominations for the award were submitted to Robbie Moore MP's office. The award is designed to honour those across our area who are going out of their way during the Coronavirus pandemic to help others, but whose efforts would usually go unrecognised. Ellie has been helping at Hainworth Wood Community Centre during the week and at weekends. Ellie delivers hot food to elderly residents with the help of her mother and other volunteers. Her efforts have been much appreciated by the many elderly residents she has been helping. Ellie goes out of her way, as in addition to delivering the hot meals, Ellie has been taking the time to speak with many residents on the door step in a socially distanced manner making sure all are ok. Ellie helps a group of five other ladies who set up the food delivery group in response to Covid-19. Robbie was first introduced to Ellie when they both helped to deliver afternoon tea to elderly residents on VE Day.
Robbie said: “It is always great to see people from all age groups mucking in and helping the most vulnerable in our society. Ellie, aged 16 is a real inspiration to us all and is a credit to her community in Hainworth, but also across the wider Keighley area. Having spoken with Ellie a few times, her enthusiasm and desire to help others definitely shines through. Well done Ellie - you are a worthy winner of the award, and thank you for all you have been doing.
