Local MP Robbie Moore has co-sponsored a new bill in Parliament which would see additional government support for local market traders.
The bill, presented to Parliament by Simon Baynes MP, Member of Parliament for Clwyd South, will seek to address a decline in occupancy rates for market stall holders and the increase in markets operating at a loss, exploring new government support for markets.
Mr Moore says that markets are an “integral part of our community”, adding he is “proud” to co-sponsor the bill and vowing to work with fellow MP’s to take the bill through Parliament.
The Markets and Market Traders bill will be presented for second reading in the coming months.
Robbie Moore MP said:
“Local markets are an integral part of our community and play a vital role in supporting our local economy.
As a regular user of the Keighley Market, which is over 50 years old, I know just how important it to bang the drum for our local traders and ensure that they are supported during these challenging times.
Speaking to the many customers that shop at Keighley Market, I know just how important it is to them that store holders have the confidence to sustain their businesses into the future.
I was therefore proud to co-sponsor this bill and will continue to fight for their rights and ensure that our markets have the best support possible, as I know how core they are to our day-to-day lives.”
