Local MP Robbie Moore has joined community leaders and servicemen and women to pay his respects to a Canadian air crew killed during a Second World War plane crash in Oakworth,
The annual tribute, overseen by Oakworth Village society, remembers the six Canadian airmen killed when their Wellington bomber crashed above Oakworth on January 2, 1944.
The memorial was attended by more than than 100 people, and included the laying of wreaths followed by a reception in Oakworth village hall, where information about the crew was displayed by the Men of Worth Project.
Speaking after the memorial, Robbie Moore MP said: "It was lovely to join residents, cadets and service personnel today for a fantastic ceremony and to lay a wreath to remember the six Royal Canadian Air Force men who died when their Wellington Bomber BK387 crashed in fog 79 years ago, on the 2nd January 1944 on the hillside at Tewitt Lane, Oakworth whilst on a training mission at RAF Ossington. They will always be remembered:
Pilot – Ernest Israel Glass
Navigator – James Justin McHenry
Wireless Operator and Air Gunner – Jack Henfrey
Air Bomber – James Edwin Dalling
Air Gunner – Norman Willard Crawford
Air Gunner – Emery Savage
Truly a beautiful service."
