Maria Culley, from Silsden West Yorkshire, who is dedicated to the early years, is a Finalist for The Family Children’s Champion Award 2022.
The Children's Champion Award recognises the incredible effort Early Years professionals put into their work, and the impact they have on the adults of tomorrow.
Maria has worked across the sector for over 15 years. Having experienced first-hand what challenges the sector faces she is currently working with her MP Robbie Moore to regulate the Nanny industry.
The Road To Nanny Regulation is currently a working report on how the Nanny industry can become regulated in order to safeguard and protect children and young people.
Maria Culley said: “I stand by my previous statements published in 2019 and that the road the regulation can be a bumpy one, and change is vital to Safeguard and protect children.
Since the original campaign was closed, I have been promoting, listening and understanding the needs of families, parents and nannies, including through correspondence with then-Education Minister Vicky Ford. The best way to begin to regulate the industry is to move forward in a different direction then originally proposed.
Children’s safety must be paramount at all times and the starting block for any form of regulation on the Nanny industry.
Receiving a nomination for The Family Children’s Champion 2022 was amazing in itself but to be finalist as Nanny is an huge honour!”
Robbie Moore MP said: “I fully support Maria’s call for stronger regulations in the Nanny industry. Currently, Nannies do not have to go through any DBS Checks or have first aid training, despite the important role they play in some children’s upbringing. Not only does this devalue their industry, but it also raises concerns regarding the safeguarding of children.
I will continue to lobby Ministers on behalf of Maria, and all those who are working to make the Nanny industry safer and fairer.”
