Local MP Robbie Moore has praised a day of action from West Yorkshire Police which saw 24 abandoned or untaxed vehicles seized from various streets in the area.
The abandoned vehicles were seized in a partnership days of action undertaken today by West Yorkshire Police Keighley Neighbourhood Team with partners from the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency (DVLA) and Bradford Council in Keighley Central and Keighley East wards.
Cars were seized from various roads including: West Lane, Grange Street, Admiral Way, Rawling Street, Malsis Road, Brewery Street, Park Terrace, Beechwood Avenue, Haynes Street, Scott Lane West, Westfield Crescent.
The day of action follows warnings from local MP Robbie Moore that the District was becoming a “scrapyard” for abandoned vehicles earlier this year, with the MP calling for the police and local authorities to ramp up efforts in a parliamentary debate on the issue.
Recent research identified the wider Bradford District as the biggest hotspot for abandoned cars outside London, with 7,625 reports of abandoned cars to Bradford Council between January 2020 and December 2022.
Mr Moore welcomed the news, calling it “an issue of fairness”.
*Robbie Moore MP said:*
“I’m very pleased to see robust action being taken on this matter. As many will know, this is something I have been raising in the House of Commons and with the police throughout the year.
Fundamentally, this is an issue of fairness. If you don’t tax your car, if you don’t insure your car, if you don’t MOT your car pr if you leave it abandoned - you lose it. This has been a real problem in Keighley and our wider area for years and I am really pleased that our Police Team are starting to ramp up enforcement in line with existing laws. I look forward to further action.”
