Keighley MP Robbie Moore has successfully lobbied the Boundary Commission to officially change the name of the Keighley parliamentary constituency to “Keighley and Ilkley”, it has been confirmed today.
Mr Moore, who launched his campaign to change the name of the constituency last year, argued that the Commission should “make sure that no part of our constituency feels forgotten about or left behind.”
With a population of around 15,000 Ilkley is the second most prominent town within the constituency, and given that many refer to Ilkley in the constituency name, Mr Moore argued that it was right to officially ensure the name change takes place before the next general election.
Following Mr Moore’s efforts, the Boundary Commission officially announced the name change in a new report today. It has to go to a final stage for approval but it is very likely Ilkley will officially be included. Robbie Moore MP said:
"I very much welcome the Boundary Commission’s new report, and it is fantastic to see that they have adopted my proposals to officially change the name of our constituency to “Keighley and Ilkley” following my lobbying efforts last year. Huge thanks to all who also contributed to the consultation, as the proposal reaches its final stage before being formally adopted.”
This name change will better reflect the make up of the constituency. With Ilkley having a population of around 15,000, it is the second most prominent town within the constituency, and given that many refer to Ilkley in the constituency name in anycase, it seems right to officially ensure the name change takes place before the next general election.”
