Local MP Robbie Moore has spoken at a roundtable event in Parliament raising awareness about the plight of women and girls in Jammu and Kashmir.
The event was chaired by former President of Azad Kashmir Raja Muhammad and was attended by a cross-party group of MP’s.
The region of Jammu and Kashmir has been a disputed territory between Indian and Pakistan since 1947, with the conflict having a profound impact on the people of the region.
According to Amnesty International: “civil society…in Jammu and Kashmir have been subjected to a vicious crackdown by the Indian government, which is determined to stifle dissent using draconian laws, policies and unlawful practices in their arsenal” (source:https://www.amnesty.org/en/latest/news/2022/09/india-the-government-must-end-the-repression-of-rights-in-jammu-and-kashmir/ )
Speaking after the event, Robbie Moore MP said:
“To mark International Women’s Day 2023 took part in a Parliamentary conference to raise awareness about the plight of women and girls in Jammu and Kashmir, attended by former Prime Minister of Azad Kashmir Raja Muhammad, Members of Parliament and leading voices on the conflict.
This conflict has resulted in the loss of lives and livelihoods and serious human rights violations against women and girls, particularly those living in the Kashmir Valley.
Women and girls are disproportionately affected by the ongoing conflict, and this conference was a sobering reminder that there is still much work to be done to support the liberation of women and girls across the globe.
The brave women and girls of Jammu and Kashmir continue to have my full support.”
