Keighley’s MP Robbie Moore has chaired a panel event in Parliament focusing on human rights abuses in Bangladesh.
The event, organised by the British Bangladeshi Community Association and attended by MPs and dignitaries from across the country, focused on the current Human Rights situation in Bangladesh, including reports of forced disappearances currently taking place in the country.
According to Ain O Salish Kendra (ASK), a human rights organisation in Bangladesh, in the last 6 years alone there have been 344 victims of forced disappearance in the country, with 40 of these disappearances resulting in the victim being found dead and with 203 people still reported missing.
Mr Moore called the reported abuses “harrowing”, and plans to meet with top Bangladeshi officials next week to urgently discuss the matter.
Speaking after the panel, Robbie Moore MP said:
“It was an honour to chair such an important discussion on the enforced disappearances taking place in Bangladesh, and it was harrowing to hear stories of human rights abuses from across the country.
Keighley has a vibrant Bangladeshi community, and it is so important that their voice is heard, and that they and their families feel safe.
These enforced disappearances are an evil method of suppression. They cannot and must not be allowed to continue, and I therefore plan to meet with the High Commissioner of Bangladesh to raise this matter with urgency.
My thanks go to the British Bangladeshi Community Association for organising this panel and bringing this matter to my attention."
