Keighley MP Robbie Moore and representatives of a Keighley-based group have met with the High Commissioner of Bangladesh, celebrating links between Keighley and Bangladesh and discussing a number of issues affecting the town’s Bangladeshi community.
The meeting comes after Mr Moore chaired a panel in Parliament on the issue of human rights in Bangladesh this month, committing to an urgent meeting with officials from the country.
On the agenda with High Commissioner Saida Muna Tasneem were Bangladesh’s human rights record, co-operation on climate change, and Keighley’s own links to Bangladesh.
Keighley’s Eden Project group were invited by Mr Moore to the meeting, where representatives had a chance to talk with High Commissioner.
The Eden Project have launched a number of projects aimed at Keighley’s Bangladeshi community recently, with the group leading two delegations to Bangladesh to visit Rohingya Refugee Camps and Bangladesh’s Parliament in Dhaka.
Robbie Moore MP said:
"Keighley has a vibrant Bangladeshi community, with our own Bangladeshi Association established in 1982. It was therefore a pleasure to invite representatives of the Eden Project in Keighley down to Parliament to meet with the High Commissioner of Bangladesh.
We discussed a number of issues facing Keighley’s Bangladeshi community and their familles, including Bangladesh’s human rights record & reports of enforced disappearances in the country. We also talked about Climate Change and the flooding challenges which face Bangladesh. Keighley has deep ties to Bangladesh, and I look forward to continuing this relationship going forwards."
Fulzar Ahmed of the Eden Project said:
"Robbie raised number of important issues at length with Her Excellency. We believe this strategic dialogue will further strengthen our unique relationship and partnership between UK & Bangladesh.
The Eden Project has successfully taken 2 delegation teams to Bangladesh from Keighley & Bradford. One of our prime objectives was to expand our level of cooperation and to contribute to the prosperous and responsible business relations.
On behalf of Eden Community Association (ECA) we would like to thank Robbie for inviting us."
