Keighley MP to hold personal debate in Parliament on saving North Street Green Space
Keighley MP Robbie Moore has secured a Parliamentary Debate on protecting the North Street Green Space, ahead of a referendum being held on whether to build on the site on 21 July.
For almost two years, Moore has led the campaign to protect the Green Space on North Street from development. As one of the few green spaces left in the town centre, campaigners argue it is a unique site which should remain as an open landscaped area for local people to enjoy. Following a Keighley Town Council meeting on the matter last month, it was decided that a referendum would be held on the subject, giving Keighley residents the chance to say they want the Green Space to be protected.
Backbench MPs such as Moore are given unique opportunities to bid for their own personal time in the House of Commons Chamber to discuss local issues. These are known as āAdjournment Debatesā and take place at the end of the day. Moore has secured the debate, which will take place on Monday 11 July, ahead of the Referendum which takes place on Thursday 21st July.
Robbie Moore MP said: āThe Green Space on North Street is a unique site in the centre of our town. Like many people, I care passionately about protecting it from being built on. Bradford Council are trying to present this argument as an āeither/orā choice between building a Health and Wellbeing Hub or protecting the Green Space on North Street, but this should not be an either/or choice. We should be able to have both - as there are plenty of other brownfield sites or empty premises in the centre of Keighley which could be used for a new Health & Wellbeing Hub. This referendum will give the people of Keighley a chance to have their say.
On Monday 11th July, I will get the chance to raise these matters during my own personal debate on this subject in Parliament. This will give me the unique opportunity to lay out our case in full, and help the campaign to protect the Green Space on North Street.
I urge as many people as possible to tune in to the debate, which will be broadcast live on my Facebook Page. Of course, I also urge all who are Keighley Town Council parishioners to turn out in their masses on 21 July, and vote to save our much-loved Green Space on North Street.ā
