A local lollipop lady has been celebrated at a Community Safety event at 10 Downing Street.
Keighley’s own Susan Chilton, who recently celebrated 45 years in her job as lollipop lady, was nominated by the town’s MP Robbie Moore as Keighley’s Local Community Safety Champion in recognition of her service in keeping schoolchildren safe.
Hosted by Minister of State for Security, Tom Tugendhat, the reception was a chance to celebrate the important work of many community safety champions across the UK.
Susan Chilton travelled down to Westminster for event, receiving a tour of Parliament before attending the Downing Street reception, where she was able to meet Mr Tugendhat and talk with her fellow champions from around the country.
Mrs Chilton has been on crossing duty outside Our Lady of Victories Catholic Primary School in Keighley since 1978. In all that time, she has never once missed one of her morning or afternoon shifts, and it is a job with which she intends to carry on.
Robbie Moore MP said:
“I was extremely proud to nominate Mrs Chilton as our Community Safety Champion in recognition of an incredible 45 years of service to the safety of our children. It’s always fantastic to see local residents making positive news in national headlines and Mrs Chilton's story is one that exemplifies all the fantastic things about Keighley.
The fact that many of the current parents were looked after by Mrs Chilton themselves when they were pupils is a testament to her service and I think we can all agree that Keighley is lucky to have her.”
