Local MP Robbie Moore has backed the second reading of Home Secretary Suella Braverman’s proposals to crack down on small boats carrying migrants crossing the Channel.
Under the legislation, anyone found to have entered the country illegally would be removed from the UK within 28 days and be returned to their home country or a "safe third country" like the African state of Rwanda. They would also be banned from returning to the UK or claiming British citizenship in future.
Commenting on the Illegal Migration Bill, Robbie Moore MP said:
Our Illegal Migration Bill is about fairness. Fairness to the UK Taxpayer but also fairness to those who genuinely need help.
The Bill will change the law so that people who come to the UK illegally can be detained and then swiftly returned to a safe third country or their home country. It is only by removing the incentive for people to risk their lives to travel to the UK illegally that we will stop the boats.
This bill will send a clear message to the people smugglers sending vulnerable people on such a treacherous journey - that they will be caught.
Our Conservative Government is determined to do something about it - and I support the Government wholeheartedly in Stopping the Boats.
Labour have no plan on this issue and have already voted down this legislation.
